Our History |
April of 1993, a meeting was held regarding the formation of a new organization that would later be known as Sigma Kappa Chi Sorority Inc. It was discovered that the Asian American population of the UCSB campus was growing and that an Asian American Sorority was needed to fulfill the needs of the Asian American women. Arranged by Amy Kwan, Sigma Kappa Chi's first president, along with Esther Kang, Celeste Maglan, and Kathleen O'Hara, the first meeting was held. These ladies shared a common desire to unify the women on campus and began the process of establishing a sorority.
In the fall of 1993, Aimee Baronia, Victoria Hughes, and Sarah Pak joined the girls in their efforts. Together the seven founders strived to build the foundation of the sorority. With much enthusiasm and dedication, the seven founding mothers of Sigma Kappa Chi have learned the meaning of sisterhood, respect and everlasting friendship. On October 12, 1993, the founding mothers of Sigma Kappa Chi formally established an Asian American interest sorority with the intent to provide sisterhood for the women at the University of California, Santa Barbara campus, cultural awareness in the community, and the pursuit of academic excellence. |
